(ZD NET) Dell plans to stop shipping preinstalled Red Hat Linux on its desktops and notebooks. Dell will continue to offer the OS on workstations and servers. Citing slow demand for the operating system on client PCs over the last several quarters, a Dell spokesman said the PC maker chose to stop preinstalling Red Hat Linux on desktop and notebook models.

With the introduction of Intel's 2.0GHz P4 expected at the end of this month, reportedly to be accompanied by a price-slashing session on existing P4's, this appears to be the calm before the storm, with few prices moving for a second week in a row. Check out our Weekly CPU Prices here.

Fujitsu Computer Products of America announced late Wednesday that it will exit the desktop hard-drive business to focus on the more profitable notebook and server markets. In addition to scanners and magneto optical drives, Fujitsu makes hard drives for desktop PCs, notebooks and servers. The desktop hard-drive business is notorious for its highly competitive environment, which is thick with competitors, but thin with margins.

Intel Corp. has announced plans to open its new network processor design center in Malaysia, the first in Asia for the world's leading maker of computer chips. The Southeast Asian country is expected to assemble, test and package the Pentium 4 chip, the U.S. company's highest-performance microprocessor for desktop computers, said Craig Barrett, chief executive of Intel.
