(ZD NET) Intel has decided it's time for Rambus memory to stand on its own. The chipmaker, as expected, has begun efforts to phase out subsidies for PC makers using RDRAM, high-speed memory based on designs by struggling chip company Rambus. Intel says the subsidies, which include a rebate for PC makers and a Pentium 4/RDRAM bundle, are no longer necessary to lower prices and increase availability of RDRAM, which initially was the only memory supported by the Pentium 4.

Prices have not really fluctuated much at all, this week, with few going up or down. But with rumors of another price-slashing session on P4 prices coming in a few weeks, buyers planning to get high-end processors, whether they be P4's or Athlons, may want to wait a bit. Check out our Weekly CPU Prices here.

(Press Release) Panasonic and MedioStream announced the compatibility of MedioStream's neoDVDstandard DVD publishing system with Panasonic's DVDBurner, a 4.7/9.4GB combination DVD-RAM/R drive. With neoDVDstandard's innovative one-click software solution, even novice camcorder users can turn digital video into a DVD-ready file on the fly. Then, using Panasonic's dual-technology DVD drive, the videos can be recorded to 4.7GB rewritable DVD-RAM discs that can be edited or to write-once DVD-R discs that can be played back by most of the DVD-ROM drives and DVD players in use today. MedioStream will be demonstrating neoDVDstandard with the DVDBurner in Panasonic's TechVideo Expo Booth No. 419, July 30-31. The Expo is being held at the DoubleTree Hotel Monterey Conference Center in Monterey, Calif.

(Press Release)  Hitachi, Ltd. has announced that it has decided to withdraw from CRTs for PC monitors. In line with this decision, by the end of 2001 Hitachi will halt production of monitor CRTs at its manufacturing bases in Japan, Singapore and Malaysia, and is reviewing specific options for selling the business.  The sluggishness of the desktop PC market has reduced demand for CRTs for PC monitors, leading to a sharp fall in prices. Moreover, with future demand expected to shift to LCD monitors, there are no prospects for growth of the monitor CRT market.
