On Oct. 5, Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel filed the counterclaim and an answer to a suit recently filed by Via in the U.S. District Court in Texas. In the counterclaim, Intel alleges that Taipei, Taiwan-based Via and its U.S. subsidiary Centaur Technology infringed five U.S. patents that Intel holds when Via developed the C3 processor. The suit seeks unspecified damages and a permanent injunction to prevent Via from selling the chip. Intel actually kicked off the legal proceedings in September by filing a suit in federal court in Delaware against Via for patents relating to chipsets. The suit alleges that Via is making Pentium 4 chipsets without a license. Via responded by filing the Texas suit, claiming that the Pentium 4 infringes on technology included in the C3. Subsequently, Intel filed more suits against Via and its various business partners in Hong Kong, England and Germany. In the suits in Hong Kong and England, Intel alleged for the first time that Via is infringing on its processor technology.

(Press Release) Intel Corporation announced the availability of the Intel PRO/DSL 3220 modem. The modem includes revised hardware and software that increases digital subscriber line (DSL) performance, makes the modem easier to install, and provides additional remote diagnostics capabilities for telephone company support personnel. Installation of the new modem is simplified by the addition of new auto-configuration software that allows for a hands-off, zero reboot installation for most PCs. New USB rate adaptation software optimizes the bandwidth usage of the USB bus within the PC. This addresses the concern that high-speed USB devices will dominate the USB bus at the detriment of other USB devices.

Intel's model 3220 software includes Intel® Self Install Technology, which reduces the cost of deploying the modems in residential markets by eliminating the need for service providers to make a service call to install the modem. Intel has significantly improved the model 3220 diagnostics capability by including advanced tools that allow Telcos to remotely check the viability of the DSL modem connection. The model 3220 can automatically discover the VPI/VCI pairs assigned by a telco's DSLAM. It also can discover the right DSL protocol provisioned by the telco for that customer.
