Whoa, before you start sending in those flame mails, we're well aware that Quake II technically came out in 1997. So what's it doing in a 1998 roundup? id Software's Quake II arguably had the largest effect on the FPS genre in 1998 than any other game, even though it came out in 1997… the last few weeks of 1997 mind you.
1998 saw a surge of mods for Quake II, some developed by established development houses, some by a group of talented, independent individuals and others by aspiring solitary designers. These include such personal favorites as Rocket Arena 2, Jailbreak, Headhunter and CTF. Quake II's influence on 1998 also extends to the games it powered, 2 of which made our cut for this article. Proving that it's technology is timeless (hypothetically speaking), id Software has also licensed the Quake II engine to several 1999 titles as well, including Xatrix's Kingpin and Ion Storm's Daikatana and Anachronox.
As a game, Quake II doesn't offer much in the way of AI or vibrant colors, however it sets the standard for eye candy, weapon balance, customizability and multiplayer capabilities in 1998, period.
