Although the merits of the Slot-1/SECC/SEPP architecture have been debated ever since the format's introduction, one thing is for certain: It's not going anywhere. Intel has clearly demonstrated a loyalty to their proprietary standard, whether for true technological reasons or for just legal protection barriers is unclear. Love it or hate it, the Slot-style of CPU mounting will go far into the next decade, particularly once AMD joins the fray with their Slot-A based K7 class of CPUs.
Unfortunately the Celeron class of CPUs won't be able to enjoy the easy upgrade path of Slot-1 forever, as Intel has already stated publicly that once Socket370 gains a proper foothold in the marketplace, then the Slot-1 versions of the Celeron CPUs will be phased out. As far as when this move will begin to take place is anyone's guess, Sharkyextreme sources indicate that in all likelihood the 2nd half of 1999 seems likely.
Luckily there's a lot of time between now and the 2nd half of 1999, and the Celeron 366 and 400 will be offered as Slot-1 versions in quantity for quite some time.
