  • Of course, the most important part of the V7700 Deluxe is its video digitizing capabilities. You can hook up an SVHS or composite source to your V7700 Deluxe and record straight to your hard disk. Beyond simply recording to disk, the V7700 Deluxe also lets you do time shifting and screen shots as well as editing with bundled software.

The V7700 Deluxe includes software that enables video time shifting. Just like the TiVo, the V7700 Deluxe can record video as you watch a live television feed on your computer and will allow you to pause a live feed, rewind, or replay a portion of video while the card continues to record the rest of the live feed. How much you can record depends on the size of your hard drive and the quality levels you set. The time-shifting ASUS bundle works rather well, but the interface leaves much to be desired. It is functional but it is not user friendly.

The other flaw of the V7700 Deluxe as a time-shifting VCR is that it does not include a TV-tuner. This means that, out of the box, you can time shift what comes out of your VCR or other device, but you cannot use the time shifting to change to a channel and record programs while you are away. The box also includes virtually no information on what TV tuner cards are compatible. The V7700 Deluxe is definitely many steps behind Matrox's G400-TV and ATI's All-in-Wonder on this one. Both of those competing cards include a TV tuner.
